    1. Where are vacation rental companies located?
All vacation rental companies we recommend are located in South Lake Tahoe, CA and Stateline, NV. Located at the southern tip of Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe and Stateline are only 58 miles south of Reno, Nevada, 198 miles east of San Francisco and 100 miles northeast of Sacramento. All are just minutes to the lake, to some of the best skiing in North America and to famous casinos!
  2. Are lakefront rentals available?
Normally the answer is yes, but not very many. They will be priced at the top of the vacation rental market, and will usually be large homes that could be used for large gatherings or corporate functions. Please check with each vacation rental company herein for availability of lakefront vacation rentals.
  3. What is the difference between the North Shore and the South
Shore of Lake Tahoe?

One can drive completely around Lake Tahoe in about an hour and a quarter, so everything is relatively close to the South shore, which people favor because it offers the most opportunities for recreation. Casinos at Stateline, NV, skiing at Heavenly Mountain and all manner of water sports and summertime activities are within minutes.

The North Shore has excellent skiing opportunities at resorts such as Squaw Valley USA, Diamond Peak and Alpine Meadows. These different recreational facilities require some driving, always less than an hour. If you explore the area from our South shore, you will be assured of a pleasant experience!
  4. What ski areas are nearby?
Heavenly Mountain is within minutes of all South shore vacation rental properties. Heavenly Mountain is right in the middle of town. It is one of the largest ski resorts in the United States, rising to 10,100 feet -- the highest elevation of any ski resort in Lake Tahoe! South Lake Tahoe is also located less than an hour from 15 other ski resorts.

  5. How close to skiing, hiking, biking...?
All South shore vacation rental properties are centrally located to a multitude of diverse activities offered in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Whatever activity interests you, you can probably be doing it within five minutes to an hour, at most!

  6. How close are the casinos?
Lake Tahoe's largest selection of casinos is located in Stateline, Nevada, across the state line in the middle of South Lake Tahoe. After an exciting day on the lake or the slopes, enjoy first-class entertainment and gaming at Caesars, Harrah's Lake Tahoe, Harveys, Lakeside and a variety of other casinos and exciting attractions.
  7. What golf courses are nearby?
There are four golf courses within minutes of all vacation rental properties. The Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, home of the "American Century Celebrity Golf Classic", is the premiere area golfing experience. There are many other area golf courses as well, ranging from professionally designed ones to local 9-hole walkabout courses.

  8. What about local transportation services?
South Lake Tahoe provides an excellent shuttle bus service that follows Lake Tahoe Boulevard that runs across town. Some of the casinos also provide shuttle services to and from Heavenly Mountain. Transportation services are not provided by vacation rental companies, however. Almost all vacation home renters come with their own transportation.
  9. Do I need a car for a vacation rental?
There are numerous clean, inexpensive and reliable car-free transportation options in South Lake Tahoe that are easy to access. However, we recommend renting a car if your vacation plans include exploring as much of the area as you can. With so many things to do and see, it is easier to enjoy your vacation on your time schedule if you rent a car.
  10. How far is the Reno airport from South Lake Tahoe?
Reno International Airport is 58 miles and one hour and 15 minutes travel time from the South Shore.
  11. What activities are nearby?
There are a multitude of year-round activities to enjoy that only require five minutes to an hour travel time from any vacation home property. In the summer, there are enough out-of-doors activities to keep an entire family busy for months. Have fun boating, water skiing, jetskiing, windsurfing, parasailing and rafting. Fish. Golf. Play tennis. Bungee jump. Rock climb. Hike and bike on the flat or on the mountains. Visit a beach and take a picnic and take a dip. Ride a horse and ride a trolley. And more!

In the winter, choose from 15 ski resorts that offer skiing, snowboarding, telemarking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and tubing action. You will also find... Art Galleries. Museums, Lake Cruises. Hot Air Balloons. Restaurants. Shopping. And 24-hour nightlife and entertainment around town and at nearby casinos. Lake Tahoe has it all! And any vacation home property is close to all of it!

  12. What should I bring when I rent a vacation home?
Groceries are all you will need! A "starter kit" of bath tissue, paper towels, trash bags, bath soap, shampoo, laundry detergent and dishwashing detergent is normally supplied. Towels and bed linens are also provided for the number of people each property sleeps.
  13. Do vacation rental homes have kitchens?
Every vacation rental home we have ever heard of has a fully equipped kitchen. Each rental usually has pots, pans and place settings to accommodate the same number of people the home or condominium sleeps. Virtually all properties have access to barbecues in the summer. Whether you are planning a picnic or Thanksgiving Dinner, you are covered! (You may want to bring anything special or important that you like to have in a kitchen as well.)
  14. Am I expected to clean before I check out?
Vacation rental companies clean your rental after your departure. This service is added to your rental fee when you make your reservation. Most rental companies expect you to do "light clean up" before departure. This means bagging trash, washing dirty dishes and putting dishes away in the cabinets.
  15. What about pets?
Most all vacation rental homes are privately owned. Therefore, the owners
specify whether or not pets are permitted.
  16. What about baby cribs?
Cribs may be rented daily and weekly through independent businesses in South Lake Tahoe. Call "Baby's Away" at 800-446-9030 or 530-544-2229. Advance reservations are recommended. The items you order will be delivered to your rental property before your arrival.
  17. How old are vacation rental properties?
All vacation home properties vary in age. All are routinely well-maintained and kept clean.
  18. Do vacation rental homes have boat docks?
All properties within the Tahoe Keys Resort marina area have access to a boat dock. Some will have a private boat dock that comes with the house. If you are looking for a property with a boat dock, be sure to indicate that as a preference when you contact your vacation rental company.
  19. What about boat rentals?
Vacation rental firms do not rent boats or arrange boat rentals. However, most will give you names and phone numbers to help you arrange for a boat rental.
  20. What about ski packages?
Ski packages are not normally offered by vacation rental companies due to changing weather conditions and the nonrefundable nature of ski passes. Most rental companies, however, do offer discount lift tickets at their front desk and are happy to assist you upon arrival.
  21. Will a credit card make a reservation?
Yes.
  22. What is the difference between a standard, moderate, moderate
plus and deluxe property?
All properties are rated based on the décor and furnishings of the home, condominium, cabin or cottage. In general, properties with more modern, coordinated décor will receive higher ratings. A deluxe property will have modern, matching décor, while a property receiving a standard designation may have slightly older furnishings. You can expect that any property you select will be clean, comfortable and equipped with everything you need to make your vacation enjoyable.
  23. What about check out times?
Check out times may vary with each vacation rental company. Please check with your rental company for their policy. Usually special arrangements can be made, though please remember that a cleaning crew does have to come in behind you when you leave.
  24. What are minimum stay requirements?
Most rental companies have varying minimum stay requirements. Each property will likely have a minimum stay requirement. If space is available, most companies will accept fewer nights for bookings made closer to the arrival date.
  25. What about discounts?
Call each rental company to find out what discounts may be available to you.
  26. What is the reservation process?
In order to reserve a property for the dates of your vacation, most companies require a nonrefundable deposit equal to one night's rent of the property. The balance due on the reservation will then be due 30 days prior to arrival. (60 days prior on all Christmas and New Year's reservations.)
  27. What about cancellations?
Reservations are nonrefundable. However, some rental companies may offer
travelers' insurance that will cover you in the event that you are unable to come for medical reasons or weather conditions. Please check with your vacation rental company.
  28. What about the weather?
With an average of 278 sunny days a year, the chances are high that you will enjoy great weather conditions during your summer and winter vacations.
