Lake Tahoe And Sierra Weather
The beauty of Lake Tahoe has been well-known since its discovery in 1844. A major factor in that delightful aura is one of the world's most enjoyable climates. It's as though the weather gods have programmed the rain and sunshine, the snow and cold, to fit conveniently into the needs of those using the area.

Few places on earth can claim a climate of such great variety and year-round enchantment as ours. Four sharply defined seasons bring continual variety and change. Sunshine is the major ingredient of the Tahoe seasons.

In over 50 years of the weather in the Basin, 80 percent of the days have sunshine. The probability runs from a winter low of 75% sunshine to a summer high of over 93%. Any given year will provide approximately 240 cloudless days and another 75 days when both sunshine and clouds are recorded. The remaining 50 days provide the famous Sierra snowpack...and a wee bit of rain.

The Sierra Snow

Sierra snow is unique. It falls in great quantities from late November to early April, on a ratio of one day of snowfall for every four days of sunshine. The average winter snowpack is nearly 20 feet, approximately four times the average in Fairbanks, Alaska. Even the crystalline structure of Sierra Snow is rare. It is unusually reflective and it retains its fluffy perfection on the ski slopes.

Average High Temperatures

Average high temperature in Dec/ Jan/Feb. is 40, 37, and 39 degrees respectively. However these figures are somewhat misleading as they are taken in the shade, when in fact, direct sunlight readings often approach 100 degrees on western exposed snow fields. It is not unusual to see spring skiers schussing in cutoff Levi's and tee-shirts, acquiring fantastic tans and hoping they don't fall.

Lake Tahoe Summers

The Lake Tahoe summer season is extraordinary. Though as dry and sunny as the desert Southwest, daytime highs rarely exceed 80 degrees. Because of our heavy pine forests and the influence of the 193 square miles of Lake surface, the evenings do not turn cold. The summer averages one day of precipitation each month. In the summer, sun probability is 93% for the entire 90-day period.

Spring and Fall Temperatures

Spring and fall temperatures are similar, as are both seasons' rainfall figures, though Spring averages somewhat cooler temperatures and more precipitation than the Fall. Rainfall is usually 14 days in the Spring and 13 days in Autumn. Spring average daytime high is 56 degrees. Fall daytime highs average 57 degrees.

Lake Tahoe Weather is Ever Changing

Perhaps the most significant feature of the Sierra climate is its ability to quickly change. Summer has all recorded freezing temperatures, while Winter has recorded highs in the 60's. One winter brought a total snowfall of 74 feet! April has had a record high of 74 degrees and a low of one-degree.

The surface temperature of the main body of the lake, in the summer, is about 67 degrees. Out in the shallow beaches, it is warmer, varying with the temperature of the air, and swimming is enjoyed by thousands.
